Using a Photo As Inspiration to Design a Nature Inspired Family Room

While snowshoeing a few weeks back, I came across a scene that stopped me in my tracks (see photo at the end of this post).  I was awestruck by the beauty of this cathedral to nature: the graceful trees leaning in towards each other, the snowy white floor and the blue sky peeking through the clouds.

Winter is a favorite season of mine; I love the cold and I love how the colors come alive in the season’s limited palette of brown, white, green and blue. So much so I decided to create a room based on this single photograph and the mood it evoked.  The room, a cathedral ceiling living room, is my ode to this winter wonderland where simple elegance creates a retreat equally suited to relaxing with a good book or hosting a small at-home (post-Covid) soiree.

The hand-knotted rug was my jumping off point.  Its clean black lines on the white background remind me of the shadows of the trees on the snow; such a standout piece with a striking pattern that pays homage to the differing silhouettes that are created when the sun shines through the branches.

The gorgeous green sofa anchors the room and pairs with a set of unique armchairs that make me feel as if I’m being hugged by a tree. A variety of pillows, in differing colors and textures, and a cashmere throw, add layers and dress up the sofa while making for a warm welcome.

The room’s largest piece is a stately armoire, perfect for housing a well-stocked bar. With its dark walnut wood and regal presence, it recalls the inspiration photo’s towering trees. The tables do the same. The gracefully arched coffee table mirrors the room’s cathedral ceiling and the canopy of trees overhead while the end tables, placed on either side of the sofa, suggest slender tree trunks.

Branch-like lighting, showcased in the chandelier and sconces, both in gold tones, add to the overall woodsy character of the room as does the delicately arched mirror, again chosen to reflect the soaring curved tree boughs and high ceiling.

The drapery panels, featuring winged birds flying across a soft blue background, echo the beautiful blue of the sky peeping through the clouds on a crisp snow-filled afternoon. And, finally, embracing the blanket of snow from the inspiration picture, I would paint the walls in a pretty Dove White and use the same color in a high gloss finish for the trim.
